ExxonMobil, Walmart, and McDonald’s are just a few of the companies that the mega-charity supports.
With an endowment larger than all but four of the world’s largest hedge funds, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is easily one of the most powerful charities in the world. According to its website, the organization “works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives.” So how do the investments of the foundation’s $36 billion investing arm, the Gates Foundation Trust, match up to its mission? We dug into the group’s recently released 2012 tax returns to find out.
I see you, Avatar fandom
Toph doesn’t see them, though.
why you little
The world can be depressing until we remember that there are, in fact, bunnies. If life gets you down, stop and smell the bunnies (I won’t be held responsible if they scratch you with their razor claws).
Hi, I have seen a lot of these things on tumblr before and I wanted to do one because my situation has seriously gotten out of hand. This little cutie standing next to me is my 7-year-old sister. She’s in second grade and is being bullied because our dad died a year and a half ago. Every other day she comes home off the bus crying because some asshole little kid wants to grind some salt into that wound. Today she told me people were kicking her on the bus and when she turned to her friend and asked for what she should do, the little bitch said ‘ask your dad’.
The school won’t do anything about it, the bus drivers won’t do anything about it either. My mother is losing her mind because the school district is just letting this go under the radar. This is very hurtful to my baby sister and I want her to feel like there are people who care about her.
I just want people to like or reblog this so she can see in numbers how many people think that this is bull shit and it needs to be stopped.
What a bunch of little monsters. Of course, monsters are not born; they are made. It’s deplorable that none of the adults in these kids lives are recognizing that this utter bullshit is going down or taking any sort of action whatsoever. This poor girl has been failed by her peers and the school system. Emotional abuse is just an ok thing that we can allow? I don’t fucking think so.
HOLY CRAP THERE IS A FUCKING BREAD TURTLE ON YOUR DASH RIGHT NOW.
YOU BETTER REBLOG THIS SHIT.
Rear Admiral Grace Hopper would have been 107 today, and is being honored with a great Google Doodle. It’s quite literally impossible for us to imagine, as we sit here reading about her on the internet, but people used to use things like paper and pencils and chalk and slide rules to solve (and often not solve) complicated problems. Grace Hopper quite simply helped usher in the modern age, her impact, I think, is no less than the steam engine or the cotton gin.
Some awesome stuff she did: Grace Hopper developed first compiler, allowing computer calculations to move beyond simple arithmetic and into more complex problems. She also developed first standardized computer language, COBOL, which laid the groundwork for all the languages we use today.
One day she found a dead moth disrupting one of the electronic relays in the Mark 1 computer, and upon removing it (and fixing the computer), the term “debugging" was born. Here’s her daily log from that day, with the offending moth taped to the page:
Beyond that, she was a charming scientific communicator, and she possessed a marvelous ability to make people, and mind you this was in a time when almost no one owned their own computer, truly appreciate both the importance and the complexity of computing technology.
She famously carried around a bundle of nanoseconds in her purse for illustrative purposes. Here she is charming the socks off of David Letterman, and giving him a nanosecond of his very own (don’t miss the picosecond joke, either) :
